This Christmas recall game will have people trying to remember things they see in Christmas scenes in order to answer trivia questions about the scenes! It’s easy to play, great for a group, and a lot of fun! And with two different versions of the free game, there’s an option for every Christmas party!
Christmas Memory Game
A few years ago we made a Halloween recall game that’s been super popular so thought it was about time to make a Christmas version using Christmas movies that everyone is familiar with!
This game is a unique version of a Christmas memory game but instead of just having to remember where things are – you have to try and memorize an entire scene and recall things from the scene to answer questions about it. It’s a great alternative to a typical printable Christmas game while still keeping things fairly calm!
It’s one of the most fun Christmas games for Christmas parties for groups, classroom games (for teens), office parties, and more! And best of all, you can download it at the bottom of this post and start playing for free right now!
Supplies
The supplies for this game are things that you already have on hand, it’s just a matter of getting it all organized before you can play.
- Christmas Recall game – make sure you download the free game at the bottom of this post to your computer. The download link has all the questions, images, and answers you need to play. Or you can buy it in my shop here.
- Pens – each player will need their own writing utensil
- Paper – everyone will also need a blank piece of paper
- 1-minute timer – something visual that can be seen is best or a timer with a sound like this kitchen timer works best, but a simple phone timer works too.
- TV — any TV that can be connected to a laptop or phone so you can display the images and questions.
- Prize – let’s be honest, it’s more fun to play for a prize. Here are some great Christmas prize options!
How to setup the game
Here’s the best part about this game, all the hard work has been done for you, so once you’ve got your supplies gathered setup is a breeze.
1 – Test The Game
Here’s the only thing you need to do to set this game – test the downloaded Powerpoint and connect it to a screen.
Technology is great, but it’s not without its kinks. I highly recommend you ensure everything is working as it should before you play the game. The last thing you want is to sit down to play, only to spend fifteen minutes figuring out why HDMI3 isn’t showing up on your source menu.
Just trust me and test it beforehand, it’s worth it. As long as you know how to show a slideshow or Powerpoint on a computer or TV, it’ll be a breeze!
How to Play Christmas Recall
This game is designed to test players’ memory and discover who is the most observant of the group. The fun part of the game is that no one knows what’s going to be asked and the questions are a bit obscure!
1 – Hand out Supplies
This game is meant to be an individual game. It can be played in pairs, but it works best if everyone is filling out their own sheets.
To start everything off, each player will need a blank piece of paper and a pen. The paper and pens are just for when they’re answering questions – they can’t write any notes beforehand!
Sync up your device to a screen and place the timer in a central location so that everyone playing can see it or at least hear the buzzer.
2 – Do a Practice Round
The host will start the game slideshow with a practice round. We’ve built one of these into each of the games – the image is the same in both games (if you end up playing them both) but the questions are slightly different.
The screen will display a holiday image like the one below. The players are given a minute on the timer to study this image. The players’ goal is to remember as many of the details on that image as possible.
When the minute is up, a slide of questions replaces the image. Players will then write down their answers to each of the questions, doing their best to recall what they saw in the image shown previously. Give them a minute to answer the questions.
Once the minute is up and the players have finished answering the questions, move to the answer slide to see which answers they got correct. Then you’re ready to play the real game!
3 – Game Time
Now that everyone knows what to expect, it’s time for the real thing.
The game is played just like the practice round. The host will put a holiday image on the screen and give players one minute to study it.
Note!
Players cannot write things down during this portion of the game. The only time they should be writing on their paper is while the questions are on the screen. It changes the game completely if people can write down things rather than having to remember them.
Once the minute is up, the image is replaced by five questions. Players will recall as many details as they can to answer the questions correctly on their game sheet within two minutes (longer than the practice because there are more questions).
The host will then display the answers and players will mark which ones they got correct. For each correct question, they get one point. If any player gets all five questions correct for an image, they get a bonus point earning them 6 points for that round.
The game continues in the same manner for all ten rounds.
4 – Score and crown a winner
Once you’ve gone through all ten rounds, it’s time to crown a winner.
Have the players total up their scores from each round. Remember they should give themselves a bonus point for any round they answered all five of the questions correctly.
The player with the highest score wins. In the event of a tie, return to the practice question (or a different picture of your choosing) and offer a tie-breaker question. The first person to give the correct answer wins.
Game FAQs
What’s the difference between the two slideshows?
One of the slideshows has easier questions and more kid-friendly images (trains, snowmen, etc.) while the other has more challenging questions and the images are just a little less childish (family around a table, a Christmas concert, etc.).
How do I get the slideshows to download?
You can download the slideshows at the bottom of this post by filling out the form. It’ll email you a link to a PDF that has links to each of the slideshows to play. Or you can purchase them in my shop here if you’d prefer to not provide your email address.
Where are the answers?
This particular game doesn’t have a separate answer key. The answers are in the actual game itself. You’ll see a slide with an image, a slide with questions, and then individual slides with answers to each of the questions.
Prize Ideas
As promised here are some of my favorite prizes to give out during the holiday season. These are all things I might give out as Christmas bingo (or Christmas music bingo) prizes too so they work great for a game like this with one winner!
- Electric frother – this comes in handy for hot chocolate during the cold winter.
- Stuffed stocking – something silly like this sloth stocking filled with Christmas treats.
- Cash or gift card – mix it up by putting it in this unique Christmas cracker.
- Beanie – my family fights over who gets this beanie every year. Or any other sort of universal winter gear.
- Something viral – Christmas is a great time to gift things, like this shark onesie blanket, that you see all over the internet but never buy for yourself.
- A white elephant gift – pick one of these practical but still funny white elephant gifts for a great prize!
