No Bake Easter Dirt Cups
Easter dessert cups are based on our original dirt cake, but made as a mini version and decorated for Easter instead of dirt and worms!
With layers of cookie crumbles and pudding, you get a nice combination of creamy and crunchy in every bite. Instead of topping them with more dirt and worms, we’re topping them with green edible grass, mini eggs, and Easter Peeps! (You could even use chocolate covered Peeps if you really want!)
These are a super cute and fun dessert to make for Spring and because it’s a no-bake dessert, it’s an Easter treat the kids can help out with too.
It’s easy to be clever and creative with these Easter dirt cups by adding just a bit of food coloring and your favorite candies on top. I’ve made Halloween dirt cups with layers of chocolate pudding, but for Easter, I wanted to incorporate some pastel colors, which make it pop!
When served in individual cups, everyone gets their own portion making it perfect for any Easter celebrations! It’s great for little hands as well as getting up to mingle and nibble at the same time. Talk about a fun dessert for the Easter season!
Why you’ll love this Recipe
- Can customize this delicious dessert. Not only can you customize Oreo dirt cups depending on the season or celebration, but you can customize this Easter one too. Use different colors for the pudding layer, use chick peeps instead of bunny peeps. You can even swap out the mini eggs for a different candy!
- A no-bake treat. It comes together in a jiffy and can be refrigerated until you’re ready to serve it. Make it ahead in the morning and check one thing off your preparation to-do list for your Easter party.
- Fun for the whole crowd. Yes, these are adorable Easter bunny dirt cups, but we can’t forget how delicious they are. Everyone will get a kick out of this fun recipe!
Ingredients in Peeps Dirt Cups
Ingredient Notes
- Oreo cookies – For mine, I generally stick to the tried and true original Oreo cookie. No need to remove the creamy center. However, I do think Golden Oreos would be cute too – just know it won’t be the same dirt look.
- Pudding mix – Use instant cheesecake or white chocolate pudding mix so that whatever color you add, will stand out. Vanilla pudding can also be used. Just make sure that it’s instant pudding!
- Food coloring – Gel food coloring is more concentrated than liquid food coloring, therefore you need fewer drops. It is more expensive, but you can’t beat the vibrant colors.
- Cadbury mini eggs – you can use these or if you’d prefer something else, jelly beans or little candy eggs of any sort work fine. Save the Cadbury mini eggs for these mini egg cookies or mini Easter cheesecakes!
How to make Easter Dirt Pudding Cups
These Easter dirt cake cups are so simple to make! It’s as easy as making the Oreo dirt, making the pudding, combining the two together, and decorating with cute Easter candies!
There’s no baking, no real cooking, and no real way to screw these up as long as you follow the ingredients listed in the recipe card at the bottom of this post! And I can guarantee all your peeps will love them!
1 – Make the Oreo dirt
- Add the Oreo cookies to a food processor and pulse until the cookies are a fine crumb. Set the Oreos aside for later.
Tip!
If you don’t have a food processor add the Oreos to zipper top bag then put that bag inside another zipper top bag (double bagging is key so you don’t end up with crumbs all over your counter) and crush them using a rolling pin until they are a fine crumb. The food processor is much easier, but this works.
2 – make the pudding mixture
- Add the milk and pudding mix together in a large bowl and whisk together. Place in the fridge and let it set for about five minutes then stir again. The mixture should have thickened and be ready for the next step!
- Gently fold the Cool Whip into the thickened pudding mixture. If you mix the Cool Whip in too quickly, it can become too liquidy and the pudding mixture will not be the thickness you want.
- Divide the pudding mixture into two separate bowls. In one bowl, add two to three drops of the gel food dye of your choice. Repeat in the second bowl but with a different color. Fold the food coloring into the pudding mixture, gently until the pudding turns your desired color.
3 – Make and Decorate the Easter Dirt Cups
- Make the grass for the pudding cups by putting the shredded coconut into a zipper top bag and then add two to three drops of green food coloring. Zip up the bag and shake the bag until the coconut is evenly covered in the green food coloring.
- Add two tablespoons of the processed Oreo crumbs into the bottom of each of your cups.
- Add two tablespoons of one of the colored puddings on top of the Oreo crumbs. Add another layer of Oreo crumbs.
- Add two tablespoons of the second color of pudding to the cups followed by the last layer of Oreo crumbs.
Tip!
If you have extra Oreo crumbs and you feel like the Oreo layers are already sufficient, hang onto those Oreo crumbs to use for another treat later. We love these dirt cookies that are topped with Oreo crumbs!
- Top each cup with about one tablespoon of the green coconut shreds just until the the top is covered.\
- Add one bunny Peep or chick marshmallow and some mini Cadbury eggs on top of the green coconuts. And if you really want, you can add some Easter sprinkles too! It’s not essential but can add some fun color!
Your festive Easter treats are finished and ready to enjoy! You can either serve them immediately or you can put them in the fridge and serve later. If you’re planning to serve later, I recommend adding the Peep and the mini chocolate eggs to the dirt cups right before serving, not right now.
These would be such a fun surprise at the end of an Easter scavenger hunt or after one of these fun indoor Easter egg hunts!
How to Store Easter Dirt Cups
If you’re planning on serving these later, please read the FAQ below on how to make these ahead of time! They can definitely be made ahead of time and stored for later – but you’ll want to make them in pieces and put them togeher last minute.
If you do want to store any leftovers, you can but they’re going to be best enjoyed the day they’re made. They’ll still taste okay the next day, but the Oreo crumbs can definitely get a little soggy when sitting in the pudding overnight.
I do not recommend trying to freeze these Easter dirt cups, especially since they’re so easy to whip up!
Expert Tips & Storage Information
Use light-colored pudding. As mentioned above, plan to use a light or white pudding in your Easter dirt pudding cups if you’re going to add any color. White chocolate or coconut are other options.
Don’t like coconut? Use green sprinkles for the grass instead of colored coconut shreds. You can also use swirls of green icing if you’d prefer – I just like the grass look of the shredded coconut!
Not using any food coloring? You can decide to still use a white pudding or use a chocolate pudding layer instead if you want more chocolate flavor!
Recipe FAQs
Can I make these Easter dirt cups in a 9×13 pan?
Sure, you can! To make this a shareable dessert rather than individual cups, add the layers into one dish. A glass baking dish or trifle dish is best that way everyone can see the layers.
Can I make these Easter dirt cups ahead of time?
If you’re planning on serving these later, my recommendation is to make all of the components (the Oreo crumbs, the pudding mixture, and the coconut grass) ahead of time. Then put the cups together right before you’re going to serve them because they are best enjoyed the day they’re made when all put together.
