This past week I taught my first young women’s lesson since back in May when I compared the priesthood to an umbrella. It’s been way too long and I was so excited to be back with my girls. And they all seemed pretty excited to have me back as well although it might’ve just been because of the cupcake case I was carrying. The September Come Follow Me theme is commandments, and I chose to teach this week’s lesson on why keeping the sabbath day is important.
Let me tell you, I needed this lesson. I needed the reminder that Sundays aren’t just another day but that they are ones to use to strengthen our relationship with Heavenly Father, spend time with our families, serve others, and work on our own individual testimonies and faith. Not quite the route I’ve been taking lately, and it was good kick in the pants for me to be better. Like every time I teach is. You can find all of my young women lesson ideas here.
During the lesson we talked about a variety of different things such as why it’s important to keep the sabbath day holy, what does it actually mean to keep the sabbath day holy, how we can keep the sabbath day holy, and what are some of the blessings of keeping the sabbath day holy.
One of the key points that I tried to make with the girls is that there is no black and white list of here’s what you do, here’s what you don’t do – it’s more about our attitude, intent, and as Elder Nelson put it, the signs that we are giving to Heavenly Father on this day he’s given us to rest and step away from the world.
Oh and made the girls these ice cream sundae cupcakes from I Am Baker to help remind them that Heavenly Father gave us Sundays as a gift and that like the sundaes, they can be really sweet. I think the girls got the message and I know they enjoyed the cupcakes.
Anyway, along with that, I gave the girls these cute handouts of uplifting things to do on the sabbath that are in line with keeping the sabbath day holy. I designed the printable myself using white versions of these icons.
I made them a good size to fit into their scriptures or journal or even just hang up on their wall to be a reminder of things to do when they’re sitting around next Sunday. I love how all of the bright colors pop and hope that they help the girls make good decisions about activities to do on the sabbath.
