One of the most popular appetizer recipes out there for any holiday is pigs in a blanket (I prefer ones like these that are pigs in a blanket with cheese but any work). There’s just something about the taste of the baked buttery crescent dough and classic hot dogs together that’s just delicious.
These fun hot dog mummies are the full size version of those but all decorated like cute mummies for Halloween. This fun Halloween recipe has been around for a while, but it really never gets old!
So bake up a batch of these mummy hot dogs and take them to all of your Halloween parties this year – I can guarantee they’ll be a hit all Halloween season long!
They go great with these Halloween dirt cups, these mummy cookies, and these Halloween pretzels – a little sweet, a little savory, and a lot spooktacular!

Ingredient Notes
- Hot dogs – any full size hot dogs work for these. We prefer all-beef organic hot dogs but anything works – even something like a polish sausage would work too. Just make sure they’re not too big or you’ll end up with people eating half of the wrapped mummy dogs and not being able to finish them. You could obviously also do this with little s’mokies if you wanted to do mini mummy dogs.
- Crescent rolls – this recipe is written with crescent dough sheets instead of the crescent triangles, but I’ve included notes in the recipe below on how to use the crescent roll triangles if you can’t find the sheets. A dough sheet or the triangles pressed together work just fine. You could even use the canned pizza dough if you can’t find crescent rolls, but that’s your last resort.

- Candy Eyeballs – I recommend getting the smaller ones compared to the larger ones that I used on these spellbook brownies.
- Ketchup – any regular ketchup works. You’ll use it to attach the eyes and you can of course use it as a dipping sauce as well! You could also substitute the ketchup with a dot of mustard instead of if you prefer.
How to make mummy dogs for Halloween
These aren’t too tough to make but make sure to read through the instructions below to make sure you cut the crescent roll dough correctly and wrap the mummies in the right way. I mean there’s not really a wrong way, but there’s a better and not so good way!
To start, heat oven to 375 degrees and line a baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper.
Pat the hot dogs dry with a paper towel to get out any excess moisture (the crescent roll dough will stick better) and set them aside.
Roll out the crescent roll dough carefully. If you’re using actual crescent roll triangles, roll it out into a triangle and press perforations together so you have one full sheet of dough.
Use either a pizza cutter, a sharp knife, or even kitchen scissors (but not my favorite method) to cut the dough into 1/4 inch thin strips. The goal is to make all of your pieces of dough about the same thickness if possible.
Make sure to stick with thin strips of dough so you have enough to cover all of the hot dogs. If you use wide strips, you won’t be able to wrap the dough strips around the hot dog as many times so your mummy won’t look as wrapped.
Take a strip of dough (to use as the mummy wraps) and a hot dog and gently wrap the dough around the hot dog going from one end of each hot dog to the other. I like to leave a little spot toward the toy for the mummy’s face but you could wrap them completely if you want and just put the mummy eyes on top instead.
Tip!
When you’re wrapping, start with the end on the bottom side of the hot dog and try to end with the other end of the dough strip also on the bottom of the hot dog so your seams are bottom side down. Then place the seam side down on the baking sheet to bake.
Once they’re all wrapped, place the wrapped hot dogs on the prepared baking sheet, making sure to leave a little space between the mummies.
Repeat with all of the mummies.
Then place the cookie sheet in the oven and bake for 11-13 minutes (or 10-12 depending on how hot your oven cooks) until the mummy wrap on the outside is golden brown and the hot dogs are warmed completely.
Let the mummies cool for a few minutes then add a little dot of ketchup (or a dab of mustard) on the back of each of the candy eyes and place them on the front of the mummy dogs to create the mummy’s face.
Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce! I’ve included a variety in the FAQs section below that would go well with these dogs!
Expert Tips
Make these cheesy mummy dogs by using cheese hot dogs instead of regular ones! They’ll give you that cheesy flavor without all of the mess!
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. These are best served immediately after cooking them, but they will store okay. Just make sure to reheat them in the oven, not the microwave, so they don’t get soggy.
Recipe FAQs
Can I use crescent rolls instead of a crescent dough sheet?
Yes, crescent roll triangles work just fine. Just roll out the rectangle, keeping the triangles together. Then press the perforations down gently so you no longer have seams between the triangles. Then just cut the sheet of crescent dough like you would if it came in a sheet.
What goes well with Halloween mummy dogs?
These mummy dogs are great with a delicious dipping sauce such as ketchup, mustard, honey mustard, ranch dressing, burger sauce, BBQ sauce, cheese sauce, spicy brown mustard, or even a cheese dip!
