Every year I go to California for Disneyland Halloween time to go to Oogie Boogie Bash and to check out all of the Disneyland Halloween treats!
And every year I come home with one or two treats that I want to recreate at home. Last year it was this Thanksgiving punch (a copycat recipe of their fall punch) and these pumpkin pie rice krispie treats.
This year I knew it was going to be these Oogie Boogie donuts as soon as I saw them in the the Grand Californian Hotel!
Not only are they super cute, they’re actually really easy to make, and they’re delicious.
These would be perfect for a Halloween movie night to watch Nightmare Before Christmas, a Halloween party with a Disney theme (or movie theme) or just to enjoy as one of your favorite Halloween treats.
They’d even make a great Halloween snack for school or addition to a Halloween snack board!

Ingredients
Ingredient Notes
- Marshmallows – only the large ones will work for this recipe. Unless you are planning on using mini donuts, any other size will look funny.
- Donuts – I found that cake donuts work the best because they are sturdier and smaller but if you can’t find chocolate cake donuts, you can also use the chocolate frosted donuts in a pinch. Yeast donuts are often too big for the portions to look correct. We used chocolate because that’s what Disney used but any flavor donut that pairs well with melting chocolate works.
- Gummy worms – I like the look of mini gummy worms personally, but you can use regular ones or another type of gummy crawler.
- Candy melts – using almond bark or white melting chocolate that you color with green food coloring will also work for this.
How to make oogie Boogie donuts
Now on to the important part, how to make these spooky donuts. Below you will find how I did it with as much detail as possible so you get the same amazing results I did.
1 – Prep The Marshmallows
- Start preparing your Oogie Boogie by cutting eight marshmallows in half.
- To make the slightly tilted head, cut each of the remaining four marshmallows at a twenty-degree angle, cutting off about the top third of each marshmallow to create four heads.
Once you’re done, you should have four half marshmallows and one 2/3 marshmallow for each of your donuts.
2 – Prep The Chocolate
- Melt the green candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Melt the chocolate in the microwave in 30-second increments stirring in between each one until it is fully melted.
- Once the chocolate is melted, stir in one teaspoon of coconut oil. This will make the chocolate easier to dip the marshmallows into.
Tip!
Melt the candy melts in a bowl with a wide surface so that you have space to place the entire Oogie Boogie donut in it. Otherwise, you’ll have to pour the candy melts into another container and that’s just one more dish to wash.
3 – Attach The Marshmallows
Start by lining a baking sheet with a piece of parchment paper.
You can also just do this on the counter if you’d like, but I prefer a baking sheet so you can pick it up and move it.
Once the baking sheet is ready, it’s time to create your Oogie Boogies!
- Dip the uncut portion of a cut marshmallow into the melted chocolate. Then attach it to the top right side of the donut. To make the arm look like Oogie Boogie, make sure to point the marshmallow up on the left side.
- Dip another marshmallow on the uncut side of the marshmallow into the chocolate and place it on the upper left portion of the donut. The point should face to the left side again and this will create the left arm.
- Then create the legs by dipping another halved marshmallow into the melted chocolate. This time make sure to dip the cut side of the marshmallow then stick it onto the bottom right of the donut with the point on the right side.
- To make the other leg, repeat the previous step but attach the marshmallow to the bottom left of the donut facing the point to the left. It should look similar to the picture above.
- Using the marshmallow cut like the head, dip the uncut side of the marshmallow into the melted chocolate and place it onto the top of the donut. This will be the head so make sure it is centered between the arms.
- Place the Oogie Boogie onto the parchment paper let the chocolate completely set before moving on. Otherwise, the marshmallows will fall off when the whole thing is dipped into the chocolate later on.
4 – Cover Oogie Boogie With Chocolate
After the chocolate has completely set attaching the marshmallows to the donut, you are ready to dip the whole thing into the chocolate.
- Remelt your candy melts as needed if it has hardened while you waited for the marshmallows to set. Just put it back in the microwave and heat back up just like you did in step two above.
- To cover Oogie Boogie with chocolate, place your donut and marshmallows into the bowl, and using a fork, dip the Oogie Boogie into the chocolate. Or lay it in the bowl and pour the melted chocolate over the donut and marshmallows. Either way, make sure the donuts and marshmallows are completely covered in green chocolate.
- Carefully remove Oogie Boogie from the melting chocolate and lay the fully coated Oogie Boogie back onto the parchment paper and let it dry completely. This should only take 15 minutes or so.
5 – Finish the Oogie Boogie Donuts
- While the chocolate is setting on the donut and marshmallows, melt the black melting chocolate in a small microwave-safe bowl. Again, melt in short 30-second increments while stirring in between each one until the chocolate is fully melted.
- Place the melted black chocolate into a piping bag, or use a Ziploc bag with a small hole cut in the corner of the bag. This will be used to create the stitches across Oogie Boogie.
- Once the green candy melts have completely set, pipe black chocolate stitches onto Oogie Boogie. Feel free to copy what I did in the pictures or be creative and add them where you would like.
- For the face, pipe two triangle eyes and a mouth with stitches.
- Then for the final touch, add gummy worms to the center of the donut. This will be the stomach of Oogie Boogie.
Serve them on a long platter, on a Halloween dessert board, or individually wrap them to give out as a fun Halloween party favors or in boo buckets!! They’d be super cute with one of these Halloween gift tags!
Expert Tips And Storage Info
Microwave gummy worms for five seconds to get them to be more moldable if you want them to be shaped like they are in my photos. Or you can just place them right on top of the donuts.
Make mini Oogie Boogie donuts by using mini marshmallows and homemade donuts like these or packaged powdered donuts.
If you live somewhere hot, place them in the fridge to set the chocolate when needed.
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. After that, they will start to get stale.
Do not freeze because the donuts inside will get soggy when thawing.
Recipe FAQs
Can I melt the candy melts and chocolate over the stove?
You can melt chocolate over the stove if you use a double boiler system like this one. I actually prefer to melt chocolate over the stove to control the temperature of it, but it does take a little longer than microwaving it in the oven.
Can I make these donuts ahead of time?
You can make these the day beforehand without any problems. Just make sure to store them in an airtight container in a cool location so the chocolate doesn’t melt.
