Fast and Fluffy Pizza Dough
My family loves pizza. Pretty sure my boys could eat it every day of their lives and not get sick of it.
I mean who doesn’t love pizza – it’s one of my favorites too because you can have it in so many ways. Whether it’s pizza loaf, pizza roll-ups, or pizza twists.- pizza in any form is always a good choice.
So of course we had to make our own homemade pizza dough. My sister worked for weeks with different combinations of regular sugar, brown sugar, yeast, no yeast, and so on.
We tested more pizza doughs than I can count and finally landed on this recipe that the entire family picked as our favorite.
And I hope you love it as much as we do! It’s a quick homemade pizza dough that you can start right now and have ready for dinner in a few hours without feeling like you’re getting a watered down version of the real thing.
Why you’ll love this Pizza Dough
- Great for a crowd – this recipe is super simple to make, which means it’s great for making big batches for a crowd (or a family). We’ve used it for the entire extended family with our brick oven pizza oven, and it worked perfectly!
- Quick and easy – this only uses six ingredients, most of which you should have on hand. And like I mentioned before, it takes just over an hour to make, much shorter than most pizza doughs!
- Tastes great – using both sugar and honey gives it its flavor without having to let the yeast ferment overnight.
Homemade Pizza Dough Ingredients
Ingredient Notes
Most doughs, like this one, can be made with just a few basic ingredients. Here are a few ingredient notes and substitutions that will work with this recipe.
- Sugar – you can use brown sugar but it will give the dough a subtle richer taste. We tried it with brown sugar as well and the entire family agreed regular tasted better in a blind taste test.
- Honey – this can be omitted and the recipe will still turn out, though it will make the dough more bland. Unless you’re really working on cutting back on sugar, I highly recommend using the honey.
- Yeast – any type of active or quick rise yeast will work.
- Flour – I use all-purpose but you can use bread flour instead. It will also work with wheat flour, but pay attention to the dough when adding it. Typically dough requires less wheat flour than all-purpose.
How to make Homemade Pizza Dough
Now that you’ve got everything you need, let’s make some pizza! It may seem like a lot of steps but honestly the mixer is doing most of them and they’re all pretty easy!
So don’t be scared – just be excited about making your own homemade dough and about how good that homemade pizza is going to taste!
1 – Make the pizza Dough
- Combine warm water, sugar, yeast, and honey in the base of a stand mixer and allow to sit for 5 – 10 minutes or until foamy.
- Once foamy, add in salt and mix lightly with the dough hook.
- With your mixer on low speed, gradually add flour until a soft dough forms. This may require a little more or less flour than the recipe calls for depending on your altitude and how you measure your flour.
Tip!
You have enough flour once you can press your finger lightly into the dough without any sticking to your finger. If you’re almost there, add a little bit more flour at a time until you reach the desired consistency of the dough!
- Allow the dough to knead in the mixer for three minutes on low speed.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and shape into a ball. If you find it to be too sticky, flour your hands and work a little extra flour into the dough while you shape it.
2 – Allow pizza Dough To Rise
- Transfer shaped dough into a lightly greased bowl and allow to rise in a warm space for one hour or until doubled in size.
Dough Rising Tip!
This step can be skipped if you are making something like pepperoni rolls or pizza loaf where the dough is beng used to wrap around something or be shaped, not just a normal flat pizza dough. I don’t recommend skipping it if you are making a traditional pizza.
To speed up the rising process, preheat the oven to the lowest setting then turn it off once it is ready. Then place the covered bowl in a warm oven with the door shut. Pull it out once dough has doubled in size.
3 – Shape and add ingredients
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees while you prepare your pizza.
- Once the dough has doubled, roll out or stretch the dough on a floured surface into two 12-inch pizzas or one full-sized cookie sheet. Make sure to leave the edges thicker for a crust, or you can fold over the edge to create a crust.
- Transfer to a pizza stone, a pizza pan, or a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet (before adding ingredients) so it doesn’t get stuck to the counter.
- Top pizza as desired, making sure to leave the edges (the crust) without sauce or toppings so it can bake up nice and fluffy.
4 – Bake and Serve the Homemade Pizza
- Bake in a preheated oven for roughly 20 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.
- Slice the pizza into triangle slices if you made round pizzas or into squares if using a sheet pan.
- Serve immediately while the pizza is still warm!
How to Store Homemade Pizza Dough
If you’d like to make this pizza dough ahead of time, you can make it and then store the dough in an airtight container for up to five days.
Once the pizza is baked, you can also store it in the refrigerator for up to five days in a zipper top bag or airtight container. Then when you’re ready to reheat, place the pieces of pizza in a cold oven, turn it on to 375 degrees, and allow the pizza to heat up with the oven.
Or if you have an air fryer with a pizza button, that also works great too!
Expert Tips
The less flour used the stickier the dough and the trickier it will be to work with. It also tends to result in a lighter crust, so only add as much flour as you need to be able to work with the dough, but less is more.
Keep your hands and workstation lightly floured to make it easier to work with the dough.
If making pizza try stretching the dough instead of using a rolling pin, this just means pulling gently at each side to get the shape you want.
You can skip the honey, but it enhances the dough flavor a lot. Don’t add extra sugar in place of the honey.
If using this recipe to make something like pizza loaf it will comfortably make two.
For a crunchier crust bake at 400 for roughly 15 minutes.
Recipe FAQs
What do I do if the dough is really sticky?
If the dough is too sticky for you to work with comfortably you can add more flour a little at a time until it is workable. The more flour the tougher the dough will be, so only add as much as you need.
How many pizzas will this make?
This homemade pizza dough will comfortably make two 12-inch round pizzas or one large cookie sheet size pizza. It will also make two pizza loafs or two pans of pepperoni rolls if you’re using it for one of those!
