How to Play Two Truths and a Lie
If you’ve never played the regular version of two truths and a lie, here’s the basic structure of the game.
- Everyone comes up with two truths and a lie about themself.
- One at a time everyone tells the rest of the player their two truths and their lie, without telling them which is which.
- Everyone tries to guess which one is the lie.
That’s it – that’s the entire game. It’s honestly one of my least favorite “getting to know you games” ever. Mostly because I hate being put on the spot and having to come up with something creative to trick people about.
BUT I love the idea of having to decipher which of three statements is true and which one is the lie, so I created a version of the game based on romantic comedy facts. And I love that you can do this in person and virtually, great for this time in our lives!
I also did this historical figures two truths and a lie too, but that’s better for virtual classroom fun!
Romantic Comedy Two Truths and a Lie
As I mentioned, the game in this post is romantic comedy two truths and a lie. So instead of you having to come up with statements about yourself, I’ve come up with unique statements about a bunch of popular romantic comedies.
Each movie has three statements. Two statements are true and one of the statements is false. The goal of the game is to pick the lie out of the three statements for each of the movies.
And there are two different pages of movies. If you’re playing this virtually, feel free to play through all of them. If you’re playing in person, I recommend picking one of the two to play!
How to Play
I’ve included instructions for both playing this in person with people or virtually. This would make a great virtual Valentine’s Day game or a virtual bridal shower game.
1 – Everyone Fill It out
The first option is definitely the easiest and works better if you’re all in person together. For this one, people just fill out the sheet and try to get the most answers correct.
Or if you’d rather save a little paper and ink, you could just read the statements to people and have them guess 1, 2, or 3 on their own piece of paper. I personally like to be able to see and re-read the answers, but it is an option.
Once everyone is done, go over the answers together. One point per correct answer. If there’s a tie, ask one of these romantic comedy tie breaker answers and whoever is closest wins.
- How much did The Notebook gross in domestic box office sales? $81,001,787
- How much did it cost to make the movie Gone With the Wind? $3.85 million
- What is the exact running time of the movie Titanic? 3 hours, 30 minutes
2 – How do you play two truths and a lie virtually
The second option is to make this a virtual game.
You can do this one of two ways. You can just put the entire sheet up on your screen for people to go through and answer within an alloted time (this is what I recommend). Or you can read the questions one by one and have people write down their guess.
My guess is that if you do the read the statements to people option, you’re going to be re-reading them multiple times so people can choose their answer. Or at least that for sure happens when you’re playing the traditional game.
After the time is up or after you’ve gone through all the questions, go through answers together as a group. Use the same tie breaker questions above to break a tie.
Oh and make sure people know they can’t use any cheats, helps, friends, etc. to figure out the answers. It’s harder to enforce virtually but worth saying at least.
Prize Options
It’s always fun to have prizes, especially if you’re using this as a party game or a bridal shower game. Here are just a few fun prize ideas inspired by romantic comedies.
- One of these movie gift basket ideas
- Build your own romantic comedy book
- Valentine’s Day basket filled with love items
- Razzles (or any other items from the movies)
