Ever since our sweater pumpkins went viral last year, I’ve been looking at other ways to make decorations for our house! With all of the snow we’ve been getting this year, I thought it’d be fun to make some snowman to replace all of our Christmas ornaments and decorations!
This sock snowman craft is great because they’re super easy to make (easy enough for kids) and they’re an easy to way to use up those mystery socks that somehow lost their mate. Always.
Plus, they’re super cute! And you can customize their colors to match your house decorations! Or you can just use these in a day full of snowman crafts (and snowman cookies) you make with your kids!
Supplies
Supply notes
- Tube sock – I suggest using white, but there is nothing stopping you from having colorful snowmen.
- Ankle sock – any color will work, in fact I think the bolder the better for these cute hats. This is where you can customize them!
- Rice – any rice you have on hand will work just fine.
- Black buttons – while I used black there is no reason you can’t use colorful buttons here. You could also use black pom poms or something else like that.
- Orange toothpicks – you can always paint regular toothpicks if you can’t find an orange one. You can also use an orange pipe cleaner folded in half for this.
- Wire cutters – this is the easiest way to cute through the pipe cleaners, but I have been able to scissors as well if you don’t have wire cutters.
- Pillow stuffing – one bag of cotton stuffing will make a few snowmen but you can’t buy it individually (as far as I know) so you’ll need an entire bag.
How to make a sock snowman
Sock crafts are a great activity to do with kids. They are simple enough that kids can help throughout the entire process and the final result is something they’ll want to keep.
Below are step-by-step instructions so you can make this adorable sock snowman at home.
1 – Stuff The Sock
Begin by pouring rice into the toe of the sock to fill the toe. This will weight down the sock so that it sands up!
Once you have a layer of rice, stuff the sock with enough filling to reach the ribbed part of the sock. Make sure to add enough filling that the sock is smooth and firm when you gently push on it.
Tightly wrap the rubber band around the sock where the stuffing ends. Then cut off the excess sock close to the rubber band.
2 – Make The Snowman’s Hat
Take the ankle sock and measure and mark four inches starting from the toe going up. Cut off the sock above your mark, discarding the excess fabric.
Place the hat on the top of the other sock snowman, covering the rubber band portion.
3 – Add The Sock Snowman’s Face
Using the hot glue gun, attach the two buttons where you want the eyes to go.
Place a dot of hot glue where you want the nose to go, then gently push the orange toothpicks in, stacking them together to form a triangle.
Take a black pipe cleaner and tightly roll it into a swirl, stopping after you have gone around the center one time. Then cut your mini swirl with scissors or wire cutter. Repeat this until you have four of these mini swirls.
Hot glue the four pipe cleaner swirls onto the face of your snowman as the smile, making sure to hot glue the end so they don’t unravel (they shouldn’t but a dot of hot glue always helps).
4 – Add a Scarf to Finish Your Sock Snowman Craft
Take one of your colored pipe cleaners and tie it around the snowman’s neck to act as the base of the scarf. Secure the base with a dot of hot glue.
Cut another piece of the pipe cleaner (the same color) into four pieces. Attach two of those pieces to the scarf wrapped around the snowman’s neck to look like the ends of the scarf.
Then finally, make a large swirl with another same colored pipe cleaner, cut off any excess pipe cleaner, and glue the swirl on top of the two short pieces of the scarf to finish it off.
You’re finished! Repeat these steps to create as many snowmen as you want! You could create them in all sorts of colors for your house or you could make these as holiday gifts that you give out with these Christmas gift tags!
Tips & Tricks
Use various-sized socks to create a snowman family.
Use up excess craft supplies by switching up materials, such as using old fabric for the scarf.
Adjust the amount of rice if using various-sized socks. Larger socks will require more rice and smaller ones less. You want about an inch of rice in the bottom to keep it stable.
To make sure the sock stays tied off hot glue the excess fabric after the rubber band.
Craft FAQs
What socks are best for sock snowmen?
The best socks for sock snowmen are tube socks, though crew socks will work as well if that’s what you have. In reality, the best socks are ones that you have at home and want to upcycle!
