This Star Wars danger word game will have you trying to get a teammate to guess a word without guessing the danger word – all Star Wars themed! It’s fun for Star Wars fans of all ages and great for parties, movie nights, May the 4th celebrations, and just family nights at home!
Danger Word Game
We’ve been playing Danger Words ever since I saw the game on Ellen’s Game of Games.
If you’ve never played before, the basic idea of the game is this – you have to get your teammate to guess a word without them accidentally guessing the danger word!
In the past we’ve done everything from Christmas danger words to Harry Potter danger words.
And now in honor of May the 4th coming up this weekend, I thought it’d be fun to do Star Wars danger words!
This is one of my favorite Star Wars party games whether you’re having a bunch of people over or just playing with your family!
Supplies
One of the reasons you’ll likely love this game is because you literally only need the danger word cards to play! Well and some scissors to cut out the cards!
Oh and you might need a piece of paper and pen to create a scoresheet – but that’s really it. Other than players of course!
Optional Consequences
If you want to add an element of “danger” to the game, you can implement consequences for guessing the danger word during a round. I’ve included a whole set of fun Star Wars themed consequences at the bottom of this post if you want to go that route. It’s totally optional!
How to play
If you’ve never seen the game on the gameshow, here’s how you play. It’s pretty easy but gets a little more complicated if you have teams playing, so I’ve outlined both!
The first thing you need to do is cut out your cards and put them either in a pile or in a bag to be picked randomly. It really doesn’t matter what you do with them as long as they’re available and design face down so people can’t see the words.
1 – Pick teams
Split your group into two teams – team A and team B. You can do boys versus girls, kids versus adults, family versus family. Your choice, in this game it really doesn’t matter much since everyone will hear both teams’ clues.
That means if someone is a terrible clue giver, the other team could still guess the right word just by hearing the clues from the other team!
2 – Choose a guesser
Choose one player from team A and team B to be the guessers first (everyone will guess and everyone will give clues so it really doesn’t matter who is first). Have them go to the other side of the room from the rest of the players.
They don’t really have to go to the other side of the room, it’s just an easier way to do this so that you don’t have to worry about the clue givers accidentally giving the wrong clues!
3 – Give clues
Choose a card from the bag and show it to everyone on both teams EXCEPT the guessers. Teams cannot talk about how they want to give clues or what the word on the card means!
Choose one team to go first. A player from team A will give a one word clue to try to get their team guesser to guess the word on the card WITHOUT guessing the danger word.
For example, if the word on the card is Skywalker and the danger word is Luke, the clue might be Rey.
Note!
We’ve made some changes to the cards since we took the photos in this post so the photos won’t necessarily match the words on the cards. We updated the words and danger words to be even better!
Once they’ve given their clue, their teammate must try to guess the word on the card.
- If they guess correct – the round is over and their team earns a point.
- If they guess the danger word – the round is over and the other team earns a point.
- If they guess incorrectly – the round continues and play moves to Team B.
Team B would then give a different one word clue to try to get their guesser to guess the word without guessing the danger word. So using the example above, they might say the clue “Leia.”
Team B’s guesser would then have the chance to guess the word. If they get it incorrect, switch back to Team A.
Keep switching back and forth between team A and team B until someone either guesses the word correctly or guesses the danger word. And make sure to switch players who are giving the clues on the teams so everyone is involved.
Once a card is guessed, switch the guesser out for another member of the team then play again with a different word and danger word.
How to Win
Before the game, decide how many cards or rounds you’re going to play. For example – play the number of rounds equal to the number of people you have on a team so everyone gets to be the guesser once.
Or if you have smaller teams, play a certain number of cards or a time limit. You know your players best. Each round will likely only last a few minutes long, especially if someone accidentally guesses the danger word on the first or second guess.
At the end of the designated rounds or time limit, the team with the most points wins.
Additional Rules
Just a few other things to note when playing the game. I’m not sure these are official rules in Ellen’s version of the game, but they’ve for sure helped us when we play at home!
- You cannot use any part of the word or danger word in your clue. So if the word is Skywalker, you can’t use the word sky. If you do, your team loses the round and the other team gets a point.
- Teams may not talk or converse with one another before giving their clues. They can all see the word but must individually come up with their clues. There are a lot of different ways you can go for your clues and talking about things really changes how the game works.
- Rotate through players giving clues on each team so everyone participates just like if you were playing charades or asking these Star Wars would you rather questions.
- Every word on the cards that needs to be guessed is ONE word. Feel free to let people playing know that so you don’t have people guessing things too quickly like “Luke Skywalker” since the danger word may possibly be the other part of a phrase.
- If teams are going really slow, feel free to add a timer to the clue givers or guessers.
Star Wars Danger Word Consequences
If you want to get creative, feel free to have some sort of silly punishment if someone says the danger word. Here are just a couple of options that are Star Wars themed!
- Toss a wet sponge at them
- Have them answer a Star Wars trivia question.
- Make them write out as many of the Star Wars movie titles as they can within one minute.
- Have them drink blue milk.
- Make them do an interpretive dance using a lightsaber to one of the Star Wars theme songs.
- Get shot with a Star Wars nerf blaster.
Prizes
Pick one of these fun Star Wars gifts or themed prizes to give to the winning team at the end of the game! Just make sure you have enough for everyone on the team to either split or have their own!
- Any of these homemade Star Wars treats!
- Star Wars stress balls
- Inflatable lightsabers (these were great for my son’s Disney themed birthday party!)
- Star Wars Pez
- Movie theater gift cards (to go see the movies when they’re back in theaters for May the 4th)
- Star Wars magnets
- The Mandalorian Uno (comes with special rules!)
Tips & tricks
Play virtually by having teams say their clues on a virtual call and having a teammate guess virtually. It’s a super easy game to turn virtual if you want to play with other Star Wars loving friends and family!
Don’t look at all the cards if you personally want to play! Have someone else print and cut them out that won’t be playing because it’s hard to forget what the danger word was if you saw it once. And you’ll know all of the terms on the cards so it’s like playing with a word bank – not fair!
Start with different people giving clues each round, kind of like in Halloween family feud. The first clues to give are often times harder than the last ones.
Make sure to emphasize that each answer is only ONE word so people don’t automatically guess things like Luke Skywalker or Han Solo – one of those is the danger word and one of those is the correct word!
Game FAQs
How many people can play this danger word game?
You need at least four people, and I recommend playing with no more than 10 so you only have up to five people on a team. More than that and it just gets hectic. You could also just split into more than two teams if you want.
Can I play if I know nothing about Star Wars?
Yes, you can but it’s going to be hard to give clues or guess answers if you know nothing about Star Wars. The danger word cards are designed with specific Star Wars words, phrases, and characters. If you don’t know who Boba Fett is, it’s going to be pretty hard to give clues to get your teammate to guess him.
Do you have more danger word cards?
Yes! We have danger word cards for tons of different holidays and occasions! Check out all of our danger word games!
