Price is Right Thanksgiving Game
I’m pretty sure everyone has seen the game show The Price is Right – if you haven’t, go watch an episode after you read this post!
I love all of the different games that they play on that show (Plinko is my favorite!) and thought it’d be fun to create a game inspired by the price guessing aspect of the show for Thanksgiving!
This Thanksgiving price is right game is a great option for a Thanksgiving Day game because it’s pretty simple to play, can be played with a big group, and works for any age. That means everyone from the grandkids to great grandma can play! It would be a fun one to pair with this Thanksgiving floor game!
Supplies
You’ll need to buy a handful of things for this game but the goal is that all of the ingredients you purchase can actually be eaten, either for Thanksgiving dinner, or not!
- Play money – grab some money from one of your favorite board games or you can buy a pack like this. You’ll need twenty bills per person playing – the denomination doesn’t matter, each will count as $1. You could also use something like bingo markers or coins, but they’re not as fun!
- Thanksgiving items – you’ll need to purchase 10 different Thanksgiving ingredients and keep track of the prices of them. Make sure they’re somewhere between $1-$10 each. There are more details on this under the setup section below.
How to Setup this price is right game
The setup for this game is a cinch, which is why it’s perfect for Thanksgiving because you’re probably going to want to spend more time perfecting your roasted root veggies for Thanksgiving – not setting up a game!
1 – Buy Your Items
I mentioned this before but the most important part of this game is purchasing your items that people will be trying to price. Just grab these items while you’re doing your own Thanksgiving shopping!
You’ll need eleven total Thanksgiving items that are all priced between $1 and $10. Use rounding rules to round anything to the closest whole dollar – no one wants to deal with decimals here!
So for example if something is $1.79, round up to $2. If something is $7.29, round down to $7. The only exception to this is the tie breaker item (the 11th item) – you’ll want to write down the exact price of that item.
Here are my recommendations for picking your items:
- Buy them all at the same place, ideally a place that everywhere attending shops regularly or has shopped. I bought everything at Walmart.
- Buy a variety of prices – you don’t have to do one $1, one $2, one $3, etc. but I recommend making sure you have lower priced items, mid-priced items, and higher priced items.
- Buy things people won’t be able to guess the prices – this game isn’t fun if everyone all of the items are small, easy to guess (or close to) items like a can of corn, a can of cream of mushroom soup, a can of sweetened condensed milk, etc. Mix it up with all sorts of different items.
- Buy things you can use afterwards – you could also just donate the items after if you’d prefer, but I bought all things I could actually use for our Thanksgiving dinner or with leftovers!
- Make sure people know it’s the pre-tax price!
2 – Prep the Game
Place all of the Thanksgiving items in a non-transparent bag on a table at the front of the room. Make sure no one can see them other than you (or anyone else helping you if someone is helping you).
Have everyone sit somewhere they can see the table in the front and give each person 20 bills. Explain the game to everyone, then you’re ready to play!
How to Play Thanksgiving price is right
This game is simple, but it’s important that everyone understands how to play before you get started so that they don’t accidentally guess something that will have them losing all of their money without realizing it!
Here’s how it works!
- Pull an item out of the bag, show it to the group, and describe it to everyone. This is your chance to be Vanna White! (Wrong gameshow, but you get it!)
- Give everyone 10 seconds to think about their answer, but not too long or the game will last forever.
- Count to three and on three everyone has to hold out fingers indicating how much they think the item costs. (Make sure they know it’s a whole number they’re guessing). No changing when they see other guesses!
- Reveal the actual price of the item. Anyone who did not get it exactly right has to pay you the difference between the actual price and the price they guessed. For example if the price was actually $5 and they guessed $9, they would give you four of their bills.
- Repeat this same process until you’ve gone through all ten of the items, guessing and taking money away from people who guess incorrectly.
How to Win the Thanksgiving Price Game
Once you’ve gone through all ten items, whoever has the most money leftover wins! I highly recommend giving out prizes to the winner, maybe even the top three if you want!
If you have a tie after ten items, do another item tie breaker with just the two (or three) people who are tied. Instead of having them guess a whole number, have them write down an exact price for an item.
Whoever is closest to the exact price is the ultimate winner! You could make it trickier (and more like Price is Right) by saying closest without going over, but I typically just do closest to keep things easy!
