Today continues my posts about our experiences at girls camp last week. If you missed out on the earlier posts, make sure to check out our Go for the Gold theme ideas and my cute pillow treats and free printables!
Today I’m going to switch gears from the Olympic theme and talk more about the scripture that we used for the week and how we incorporated it.
The young women’s mutual theme this year is Moroni 10:32, which talks about coming unto Christ. As a stake, we wanted to come up with an activity that could help the girls really understand this topic.
We came up with the idea to do a Come Unto Christ faith walk activity, and I created cute Come Unto Christ handouts for my YCLs to go along with the activity and day’s theme.
First, let’s talk about our Come Unto Christ faith walk. I’m sure a lot of you have probably heard of this before or maybe did it at your own young women’s camp. That’s where I got the idea in the first place. Basically what we did was setup a rope leading from a large field through the woods to our main dining hall.
One by one we blindfolded the girls, put their hands on the rope, and told them to follow the rope to the end, never letting go of the rope. Along the rope, we had leaders at designated points where the girls would need help getting around trees, switching from one direction to another, etc.
The leaders were also tasked with giving the girls either helpful or deceiving information (they were told to mix it up so that the girls couldn’t guess which was coming next) such as, “take my hand, I know a shortcut.”
If the girls listened to the deceiving instructions, the leaders were asked to gently take them back to the rope and to encourage them to grab hold of the rope again and not let go the rest of the way.
Once the girls reached the end of the rope, we had two of our stake leaders there to remove the blindfolds, give them a big hug, and welcome them home. After the girls had been welcomed home, they were able to join the other girls in the main dining hall where everyone was singing church songs reverently as they waited for the rest of the girls to finish the activity.
After everyone finished, we as a stake each spoke about a part of the scripture (Come unto Christ, be perfected in him, deny yourself of all ungodliness) and then sang I Believe in Christ. Then we gave the girls small little gift boxes with bracelets and bookmarks to help them remember the things we spoke about.
It was not only an incredible experience for the girls but one for me as well as a leader, sending them out on this “scary” journey and hoping they’d make it all the way to the end. It really didn’t take too much planning or setup and was by far the most memorable spiritual moment of the week for most of us.
Sticking with the theme, I gave my YCLs “Come Unto Christ Cups” as their pillow treat that night. On the outside of the cups, I put a label made by the talented Chelsie that said, “For when you just need a little extra living water,” and inside, I included a handout (free printable below) with some of the gifts and blessings we receive when we come unto Christ along with little treats to go along with each of those gifts.
I’ve included both the free printable handout and the list of treats below if you’d like to use this idea. I know the girls absolutely loved them, and they would work perfectly for a young women’s lesson handout as well.
One of my favorite treats inside of the cups were little prescription medicine bottles that I bought on Amazon and filled with Skittles. On the outside, I attached the printable labels below that said, “Extra strength Skittles,” and went along with the scripture about how Christ can make weak things strong.
It might not have been the girls favorite, but I love how cute they turned out. You could easily just make those as a handout as a well.
The scriptures and treats I used included:
- 3 Nephi 12:3 – theirs is the kingdom of heaven – Princess fruit snacks
- 2 Nephi 26:25 – buy milk and honey without price – Honey grahams
- Alma 5:34 – partake of the fruit of the tree of life – Fruit by the foot
- 3 Nephi 9:14 – eternal life – Life cereal
- 3 Nephi 12:20 – Be ye saved – candy
- 3 Nephi 18:25 – Feel and see – sunglasses
- 3 Nephi 18:32 – Healing – bandaid
- Ether 12:27 – Make weak things become strong – extra strength Skittles
- D&C 24:5 – Have everlasting life – everlasting candy
- Moroni 10:32 – Be perfected in him – cups
